Atlantis is a fictional island mentioned in Plato’s works Timaeus and Critias. Aristotle believed that Plato had invented the island to teach philosophy. In the story, Athens successfully repels the Atlantean attack. Subsequently Atlantis falls out of favor with the deities and is submerged into the Atlantic Ocean. Despite its minor importance in Plato’s work, the Atlantis story has had a considerable impact on literature and continues to inspire contemporary fiction, from comic books to films.
In this adaption of the Atlantis story, we begin at the height of Atlantean civilization, exploring the wonders of the great city in “Empire”. The second movement, “Cataclysm,” represents the battle with Athens and the subsequent sinking of the city. We explore beneath the surface of the ocean, viewing the flooded ruins of the city in the third movement “Underwater”. The pulse of the city reawakens and flourishes in our imagination, our literature, our art, and in “Legend.”
