The Core is inspired by the fantastic book “Proof of Heaven” by Dr. Eben Alexander, a neurosurgeon who tells of his near-death experience.  In his book, the Core is an unending inky blackness filled to overflowing with the infinite healing power of the all-loving deity at the source.

Overall, this is a subtle and highly musical percussion feature, entirely in 6/8.  There are some moments for the ensemble to cut loose and play loud, but these are in the middle of the piece as it is book-ended with a fade-in/fade out.

Written originally for Christy Latham and Santa Cruz HS (Santa Cruz, CA), The Core is great for a smaller ensemble, but will work for big groups just as well (with parts being doubled or tripled in the mallet section).
