ABOUT THE PIECE:
Distinct musical styles mark the 4 directions of the The Compass. Go on a musical journey of discovery, excitement, and intrigue! The 1st section of the show is “North”, musically evoking images of a serene, snow-covered wilderness. The 2nd section takes on a Latin flavor and rhythm to represent “South.” The 3rd section takes you to the “East” with distinctive Asian motives and modalities. The 4th and final section takes us “West” with a more contemporary indoor percussion style of music, eventually bringing back themes from the opening movement as the piece closes.
Visual ideas include utilizing the 4 corners of the floor with each movement, painting a compass on your floor and/or back drops, including a compass on your uniform, revealing different panels at the beginning of each section to help guide the audience through the different directions (imagery of the landscape or cultural symbols, etc).
We are now happy to offer this in a “Minimal Instrumentation” version as well. This is ideal for smaller ensembles that may not have access to Guitar, Bass, or Synth.
The Compass was commissioned by and originally composed for Mrs. Christy Latham and Santa Cruz High School (CA) for the Winter 2014 season.
