ABOUT THE PIECE:
Due to popular demand, MMPerc is now offering two “BEEFED UP” version of America’s pastime for the more experienced indoor percussion ensemble, one grade 3 Major League Edition and one Grade 4 All-Star Edition.
No piece of music says baseball more than “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”, a 1908 Tin Pan Alley song by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer which has become the unofficial anthem of baseball, although neither of its authors had attended a game prior to writing the song.
“The Old Ball Game” is a musical depiction of a baseball game, starting with the last phrase of the national anthem, then through the game itself with “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” The middle section of the music allows for some visual representations of the game with cheers and rally songs, then into “Shadow Games”, a more aggressive and dark piece inspired by the infamous “Chicago Black Sox” of the 1919 World Series. This fades into “America America, The Beautiful” which features a soft, double-time part for the battery. The game drives into high gear with “William Tell Overture” and ends with a brief recap of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
This is a fantastic piece for a young group. It is fun music with a strong, easy to identify theme, costumes ideas are basically built in (baseball uni’s, of course), and there are several “performance moments” built in for role playing the baseball players.
This work was commissioned by Mr. Paul Everts and Mr. Erik Bertelson for Wells Middle School (Dublin, CA) for use during the Winter 2012 season.
