ABOUT THE PIECE:
Danse Macabre, by Camille Saint-Saens, tells the story of Halloween night, as skeletons rise from their graves to dance until daybreak. It’s a symphonic poem, inspired by Michael Wolgemut’s painting, Dance of Death, depicting the same story as Saint-Saens’ piece.
The primary two themes are heard passing from instrument to instrument, and images of the skeletons’ bones clacking together as they dance come from the xylophone and bells being played with hard mallets. Every instrument has a solo or soli, down to the timpani. The piece explodes towards the end with technically challenging chromatic runs, arpeggios, and stroke patterns in the marimba and keyboard parts.
This version of Danse Macabre was arranged by Matthew Rasmussen for the 2017 Armijo High School Winter Percussion Ensemble.
