The sensations of freedom and disconnect from the world above have been explored in this joint composition between Brian Aguilar and Alex Pfiefer.  Submerged explores and attempts to recreate some of these moments musically.  At times the music feels as if you are floating weightless.  There are moments meant to represent the sights and sounds from the world above as experienced from under water.  You will hear mystery, exhilaration, isolation, fear, awe and wonder through out.

The interpretation of this music into a theme can go many different directions.  Some of the ideas so far have included falling into the water and struggling with fear and shock, an aquarium theme, and one even turned it into a show about being in outer space.  But there is no limit to what you can do with this music.  Close your eyes, experience the music, and go with whatever visions your mind might come up with.

This show is written mostly at a grade 5 level, although there are definitely some grade 6 challenges for the marimba players.  The music is very much in the mold of modern percussion ensemble and solo mallet work.  As such there are a lot of moments that will sound really “out there” to most students who have not been exposed to this style of music.  This is a great show providing an excellent opportunity for students to expand their musical vocabulary.
